Unconfirmed media reports on Friday have hinted at match-fixing in the second edition of the IPL.
The sensational allegations, made on TV channels, suggest some senior players had influenced juniors to fix results.The report said that the fixing racket involves superstars of Indian cricket and an international player, who captains one of the teams. It is also alleged that some team owners are part of the conspiracy. These quotes were attrinuted to a top official in Delhi who is part of the I-T team investigating the alleged IPL scam.The report also claimed that during the IPL, match-fixing and betting scaled a new height.As many as 27 players are allegedly part of the racket and though no names have been revealed, one of Samir Thakral, a close associate of IPL chief Lalit Modi has come to the fore.News reports said some of the 27 cricketers maybe summoned for questioning.
Team owners have however, reacted with shock to allegations of match-fixing in the IPL. Jay Mehta of Kolkata and Vijay Mallya, owner of Bangalore said he found it extremely insulting to hear such suggestions.
‘‘The stakes are so high that all operators want a share of the income. The value of IPL is well over Rs 6,000 crore and betting during each match is estimated at around Rs 500 crore. Some members of the underworld are believed to have secretly invested in teams,’’a report quotes a bookie as saying.
Meanwhile, according to a report in the Times of India, the Indian Government is contemplating referring allegations of IPL bids being rigged to the Competition Commission of India for a detailed probe. That may also spread to Videocon and Adani Group bids disappearing.
